Prop Bet

A prop bet is a wager on specific events or individual statistical milestones within a match that do not directly depend on the final score or overall game winner.

How Proposition Bets Work

Sportsbooks price proposition markets by isolating granular game events into binary options or numerical over and under lines. These wagers typically fall into distinct categories based on whether they evaluate an individual participant, a whole team, or broader event circumstances.

  • Player Props: Focus on individual performance metrics, such as a basketball player exceeding a set number of points, a quarterback throwing for a target yardage, or a soccer player receiving a card.
  • Team Props: Target collective team milestones, including which side scores first, total team touchdowns, or total corners accumulated.
  • Game Props: Involve overall match occurrences independent of individual rosters, such as whether a game goes to overtime or the total number of field goals scored.
  • Novelty Props: Cover non-gameplay elements during high-profile events, such as the duration of a national anthem or the outcome of a ceremonial coin toss.

Settlement Mechanics and Inherent Market Risks

Prop bets settle according to official league box scores and defined sportsbook house rules. A critical settlement boundary involves active playing time. For player props, most sportsbooks require an athlete to log at least one official snap, second, or plate appearance for the wager to stand. If an athlete is declared inactive before the game begins, books usually void the selection and refund stakes. However, if a player starts the game and sustains an early injury, the wager remains live and settles based on the statistics recorded before departure.

Unlike primary point spread or moneyline markets, prop betting pools often carry wider pricing margins and lower maximum wagering limits. Because forecasting single-variable outcomes carries high variance, sportsbooks protect their exposure by charging higher vig. Bettors must recognize that prop markets prioritize discrete, short-duration occurrences over full-game dynamics.
